New York

New York is situated on the Atlantic Coast, at the mouth of the Hudson River.
It is also known as "the big Apple", which is a nickname meaning several things: a place of wealth and money, or just the place to be in. It is the most important city for finance, business and art.
In 1626 the first Dutch settlers bought Manhattan from the native Americans and called it New Amsterdam. 1644 the English captured the settlement and renamed it New York.
"The melting pot" is another nickname for the cosmopolitan city. 17 million immigrants brought their languages, their customs, their food and their music to New York.
Chinatown is the largest Chinese quarter in the United States. Little Italy is next to it and is full of italian atmosphere. Harlem is the district of music: jazz, rap, blues and soul. However many areas are dirty, poor and violent. It is a difficult city to govern
